Behind its ashlar facade, the Haussmannian style fascinates with its tailor-made stature: a 6-storey building with two long balconies (generally located on the 2 e and 5 e floors). But it also imposes with its moldings, solid parquet flooring and marble fireplace. They add cachet to the space and are inextricably linked to the Haussmann style. High ceilings, large windows, spacious rooms... Yes, but if you don't live in a Haussmann-style apartment, here are a few ideas you can borrow from this style.
Mouldings are reliefs carved in wood, and are the very essence of the Haussmann style: cornices and rosettes. Nowadays, it's possible to install a cornice on the ceiling to match the Haussmann style. To sublimate ceiling mouldings, you can leave them in their original white color, or give them a brushstroke in a full-bodied or more classic shade such as gray, or in a completely different register, using the palette of the moment.
Are you partial to the herringbone, Versailles or bâton rompu style? Since the price of solid parquet per square metre is quite expensive, turn to other alternatives such as engineered or laminate parquet, which will imitate the desired style very well.
Bordered by a gilded or whitened frame and an overmantel, it sits enthroned above the mantelpiece and adds cachet to the room. The baroque mirror has already proved its worth, but to copy the Haussmann style, place it on a mantelpiece, and there's nothing else to add except a garland of lights on winter evenings!
In the living room, dining room or bedroom, it's sure to make a statement. You'll love the antique mantelpiece you find at a flea market, for example, and since it's simply decorative, you'll want to play up the accumulation of candles, wickerwork, soliflore and dried flowers.
It adds relief and gives the illusion of greater ceiling height (provided you respect a few rules of proportion, e.g. 1/3 baseboard, 2/3 wall). And to give it a more modern look, we give it a makeover in fashionable shades such as powder pink, peach, khaki and terracotta.
