There are many stories surrounding this large carboy. The most popular is that a queen named Jeanne was expelled from the Kingdom of Naples. In 1347, she took refuge in her county of Provence via Draguignan. It was then that a violent storm broke out. She took refuge in the castle of a glassmaker in the hamlet of Saint Paul la Galline Grasse (today Saint-Paul-en-forêt). When the night was over, the Queen wanted to find out how the bottles were made. The glassmaker, disturbed by the Queen's presence, blew into the bit of his cane and produced an enormous bottle, much to everyone's admiration. He then decided to launch the production of this large bottle and called her Reine-Jeanne. But the Queen modestly asked him to call her Dame Jeanne.
